APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION TO THE ROSENSTIEL SCHOOL
OF MARINE AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE

INSTRUCTIONS

APPLICATION FOR DEGREE STATUS:

  1. Application must be filled out completely. Please use the on-line application which can be found at www.rsmas.miami.edu/grad-studies.

    When completing the personal statement/statement of purpose, please be sure to include the specific areas of research and the faculty member(s) you are interested in working with.

  2. Official transcripts of all college and graduate level work are required. The applicant should request the registrar of each institution attended to send transcripts directly to the University of Miami, RSMAS, Graduate Studies Office.

    Transcripts in a language other than English should be provided in that language, but must be accompanied by a certified English translation. For all International applicants: In addition to official transcripts, RSMAS now requires a certified copy of the diploma in both the official language of your country and in English.

    Please be advised that transcripts will only be accepted if they are sent to us directly from the institution. Transcripts sent by you or issued to you (even if they are in a sealed envelope) are not considered official and will not be accepted.

  3. Students applying to the Ph.D. program with a prior Master's degree must include with their application an abstract of the thesis or reprints or manuscripts of scientific work.

  4. Three letters of recommendation are required of all applicants from persons well situated to evaluate his/her qualifications for graduate study. Applicants should have the original recommendations sent to RSMAS directly by the recommender and if they are coming from a faculty member at a college or university, the letter should be on that school's letterhead. Letters sent by you or not issued on appropriate letterhead are not considered official and will not be accepted. You will also need to download the recommendation form from https://www.applyweb.com/apply/mgrmar/index.html and have the recommender complete the form to send along with the letter.

  5. An official score of the Graduate Record Examination Test (GRE) must be submitted. To qualify for some fellowships, it is recommended that applicants to the Division of Marine Biology and Fisheries submit the score of the Subject Test in Biology. Please use institution code 5815 (there is no department code). You should plan to take the general test AND the biology subject test (if applicable) no later than November in order to have your scores reported by the application deadline. Please note that the biology subject test is only offered three times a year - November, December and April. The April test date is too late if taken in the same year you are applying for admission.

  6. International applicants whose native language is not English must submit official results of the Test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). An exception to this rule is the international student who is earning a degree or has done a substantial amount of work in a North American University. A minimum score of 550 (paper-based test), 213 (computer-based test), 80 (iBT), or 6.5 for IELTS is required for admission. Please use institution code 2919 (there is no department code). This institution code is for the TOEFL only (please note the GRE institution code is different, see above). .

  7. Non-refundable application fee of $65.00. The University does not have a fee waiver policy. When submitting the application on-line, you will be required to make payment via a credit card or checking account debit.

  8. Applicants who are applying for financial assistance must submit the application materials with all supporting credentials no later than January 1st for entrance in the Fall.

  9. The priority deadline for submitting an application is January 1st. For Marine Affairs and Policy, the application deadline will be June 1st. All supporting documents listed above (transcripts, GRE's, etc.) must be in the file by the application deadline.

  10. In addition to satisfactory scores (as judged by the division concerned) on the appropriate tests, the general requirement for admission is a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a “B” average. The equivalent of an undergraduate major in the desired graduate field is usually required. Recommendations must be satisfactory.
