Jose M. Rodríguez

Professor of Marine and Atmospheric Chemistry

Biography

Dr. Rodríguez received his Ph.D. from Harvard University (1983) in Physics, concentrating on the study of planetary atmospheres. His research has concentrated on modeling the impact of anthropogenic activity on the composition of the Earth's atmosphere, particularly on ozone. He has provided on-site modeling support to numerous NASA aircraft measurement campaigns, both at high latitudes and in the tropics. He is currently in the Science Team of the Pacific Exploratory Mission — Tropics. He has also participated in international assessment efforts sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization and NASA. Currently he is Project Scientist for the Global Modeling Initiative, a project sponsored by NASA, which is developing a global three-dimensional assessment model for the stratosphere and troposphere. Prior to joining the RSMAS faculty in September 1998, Dr. Rodríguez was Principal Scientist at AER, Inc., in Cambridge, MA.

Research Interests

My current interests involve: 1) assessment of the impact of current and future aviation on atmospheric chemical composition and climate; 2) assessment of the impact of biogenic and anthropogenic emissions on the global composition of the Earth's troposphere and stratosphere; 3) utilization of satellite, aircraft, balloon and surface data to constrain the processes and budgets of trace species of importance to the global atmospheric environment. In these efforts I utilize photochemical box models, as well as multi-dimensional global models. In these efforts I am particularly interested in incorporating the extensive database and expertise at RSMAS to better represent the interaction between the ocean and atmosphere in the above models.
