Manuscript Submission
All presenters are required to submit their manuscript(s) for the symposium proceedings no later than 1 April 2006. However, if you cannot attend the symposium and would like to submit a paper you may do so by following the manuscript submission guidelines and due dates.

A limited number of contributed papers will be included in the symposium proceedings, to be published by the Bulletin of Marine Science. Successful publication in this special issue requires that each manuscript is: (1) submitted in the Bulletin's format; and (2) peer-reviewed by at least two independent reviewers in the relevant discipline. Papers will be chosen for publication based on peer-review from among those submitted. The proceedings will be guest edited for the Bulletin of Marine Science by the symposium conveners, Joseph E. Serafy (NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service) and Rafael J. Araújo (University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science). Please refer to the Bulletin of Marine Science web page for detailed instructions on how to prepare your manuscript for submission. The following items are required for a complete submission:

  • A letter to the Editor detailing the content of the manuscript and its appropriatness for the symposium.
  • A list of at least four potential reviewers. These potential reviewers should be experts on the topic of the manuscript, and should not have any collaborations with the author(s) or be affiliated with the institution(s) of the author(s). Include full contact information, including e-mail addresses, for each potential reviewer.
  • An electronic file of the manuscript, preferably as a PDF file including the manuscript text, tables, and figures. Microsoft Word® documents are also acceptable.
  • Four hard copies of the submission in its entirety (i.e., title page, manuscript, tables, figures).
Presenters who fail to submit a complete package, as listed above, will be notified and the manuscript may be returned without entering the review process. Manuscripts that are poorly written, not formatted according to the requirements of the Bulletin of Marine Science, or otherwise flawed, will also be returned to the author without review. Please retain a complete copy of your manuscript and illustrations identical in every respect to the original submitted manuscript. Please send your manuscripts to: Rafael J. Araújo  Division of Marine Biology and Fisheries  Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science  University of Miami  4600 Rickenbacker Causeway  Miami, Florida 33149-1031 USA  E-mail: raraujo@rsmas.miami.edu.
Oral Presentations
Oral presentations will be limited to 20 minutes in duration with five minutes allowed for questions. Most presentations will take place in the Auditorium of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The Auditorium is a 249-seat room with stage, dropdown screen, and modern audiovisual capabilities. To minimize compatibility issues with different software packages and computer platforms, we recommend the use of Microsoft PowerPoint® presentations.

Review Process
All symposium presenters are encouraged to assist in the peer-review process by reviewing manuscripts submitted by their colleagues at the invitation of the guest editors.

Suggested Themes
Suggested manuscript/presentation themes include, but are not limited to:
  • Historical, economic and regional perspectives on mangroves as fish/fisheries habitat.
  • Tools and techniques for quantifying fish use and/or fish movement among the prop roots.
  • Ecological field investigations on the structure, function and/or dynamics of mangrove-fish assemblages and/or their component species.

  • Conservation and management of mangroves and associated fisheries resources.
  • Fishing cultures (artisanal, subsistence, semi-industrial, for-hire, etc.) and their dependence on mangrove resources.
  • Do mangrove habitats enhance coral reef fish populations?
  • Integration of natural science knowledge into a management framework to conserve mangrove and fisheries resources.
  • Future approaches and challenges to conserving fishes and mangroves jointly.
