Copyright

The Bulletin of Marine Science grants permission to use figures, tables, and brief excerpts from its collection of articles in scientific and educational works provided that the source is acknowledged.

Papers published in the Bulletin and distributed in print, CD-Rom, and online are submitted by authors whose goal is to have the widest audience possible. We require authors to transfer their copyright to the Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science prior to publication of articles so that we can provide as wide a dissemination as possible.

Any use of material in the Bulletin’s collection that is determined to be “fair use” under U.S. law (Section 107 and Section 108 of the U.S. Copyright Law) does not require permission. Republication, systematic reproduction, posting in electronic form on servers, or other uses of this material, requires written permission or license from the Bulletin.

Page Charges

The following page charges apply to all published manuscripts: US$70 per printed page (2.5 manuscript pages is roughly equal to 1 printed page) and US$600 per color page (first page only). Additional color pages will be charged at a discounted rate, depending on the number of color pages submitted.

Student Discounts

Student authors who conducted the work as part of their thesis or dissertation and do not have access to page charge funds may request a partial waiver of page charges. Student is required to be the leading author and student proof of enrollment will be required. All discounts have to be requested at time of original submission of manuscript.

Open Access

Authors of any article may pay a surcharge of US$1,000 to make their paper freely available through Bulletin of Marine Science online. The Bulletin has a three-year moving wall, all articles are open access three years after publication.

Language Services

The Bulletin only accepts manuscripts in English. Authors have to be responsible for ensuring that their manuscript is written clearly for editors and reviewers. For the Bulletin’s non-native English speakers, poor language quality in a manuscript may result in publication delays, or could potentially lead to the rejection of the manuscript, even if the scientific work is deserving of publication.

Authors may want to enroll the help of a language editing company to ensure their manuscript is edited professionally before submission. The Bulletin does not endorse any company in particular, and their use has no weight on the acceptance or rejection of a manuscript for publication. Authors should make arrangements with editing services directly. The following is a list of popular companies that have been used by our contributors:

“FastTrack” Publications

The Bulletin of Marine Science will publish most articles and notes in its online FastTrack section following the return of the galley proof to BMS. In most cases, the paper will be “live” within 72 hours after the galley proof is received. This enables your research to be available to the scientific community as soon as possible, and reduces the risk of delay that may be caused by the print process. In most cases, FastTrack articles will have a full citation coinciding with the citation in the print and online editions of the Bulletin. Authors will be notified by e-mail that their paper is available in FastTrack.

Reprints/PDFs

The Bulletin of Marine Science has adopted an automated online article reprint ordering system. As part of this system, author reprints will now be produced using digital technology and orders will be collected online. In addition to much faster order fulfillment, benefits include the ability to order reprints up to six months after the journal has been printed, without incurring penalty charges, and lower minimum quantity requirements (as few as 25 copies) on orders.

Following the return of the galley proof, authors will be able to order offprints and/or a PDF file of the published paper.
