|The effect of temperature on release mortality of declawed Menippe mercenaria in the Florida stone crab fishery
by Ryan Gandy, Claire Crowley, David Chagaris, and Charles Crawford
The stone crab fishery, an iconic Florida industry that provides a much appreciated delicacy, removes claws and releases the crabs to regenerate new claws and potentially re-enter the fishery. During the 2011–2012 fishing season, Gandy et al. conducted an in situ catch-and-release study to refine estimates of release mortality. Their results suggest that in addition to break type, other factors such as temperature, and number of claws removed might result in mortalities of up 63% of crabs.
