The Sea was angry that day my friends. Only the sound of strained breathing could be heard over the crashing waves exploding on RSMAS beach. 25 courageous souls, 14 men, 11 women, students, professors, and staff braved the harsh elements to compete in the first annual ROID Relay Race last Thursday and Friday. Competing in the ROID is much like making the pilgrimage to Mecca, summiting Mount Everest, or publishing your first paper…it can only be experienced, not described.
After 2 qualifying rounds in the mens individual series, AMP held two of the final four spots with MBF and MPO rounding out the final four. The final race separated the men from the boys, or rather the boys from the men as myself and Teddy Allen squeezed out first and second over the professors. The final standings were
1.) Patrick Rynne (AMP)
2.) Teddy Allen (MPO)
3.) Andrew Baker (MBF)
4.) Brian Haus (AMP)
The womens individual finals was equally hard fought between MBF, MPO, MAF, and CMAS. In the end, professor Lisa Beal was the victor, as she left the three students in her wake. The final 4 womens individuals were
1.) Lisa Beal (MPO)
2.) Kristine Stump (MBF)
3.) Kelly Montenero (MAF)
4.) Lindsey Visser (CIMAS)
And finally, the moment we all have been waiting for, the climax of 2012 athletic achievement, the interdivisional relay race. To say that intensity was the order of the day would be a vast understatement of the relay race. Bodies were pushed, paddles swung, and blood shed during this all out battle for RSMAS glory. The race was incredibly close for the first 2 laps, with Prof. Juan Agar leading the field for team MAF, but by lap 3, MBF had closed the gap and was circling for a kill much like the beloved sharks they study. Meanwhile AMP was close in 3rd place before the MPO Brazilian sensation Gustavo Marques dropped the hammer and overtook them. As is the nature of the victor, there can be only one, and this year the crown goes to MBF.
1.) MBF (Andrew Baker, Viktor Brandtneris, Dan Holstein, Kristine Stump)
2.) MAF (Nate Formel, Juan Agar, Tyler Sclodnick, Kelly Montenero)
3.) MPO (Teddy Allen, Lisa Beal, Emily Riley, Gustavo Margues)
4) AMP (Patrick Rynne, Brian Haus, Zhixuan Feng, Josefina Olascoaga)
5.) CIMAS (David Die, Lindsey Visser, Kathryn Sellwood, Ian Zink)
Many thanks to Adventure Sports Miami for providing brand new boards and helping run the event. All we had to do was give them a little gas money for their boat, so it was super generous of them. All official ROID pictures are ONLINE NOW at the Adventure Sports Miami facebook page – show your support of a group that is supporting us!
After all was said and done, we’ve raised a little over $200 for the MSGSO student travel fund!
work hard, have fun, and may the ROID be with you
