5th Annual RSMAS Alumni Lecture
Friday, May 9, 2008, 5:30 p.m.
RSMAS Auditorium
Chuck Messing, MS ’75, PHD ’79 (MBF) will be discussing his coral reef research. Following the lecture, we’ll head to the Commons for hors d’oeuvres, drinks and conversation!Hidden Oases: Florida’s Deep-Sea Reefs
Deep-sea corals are major components of seafloor communities associated with vast numbers of topographic features on the continental margin of the southeastern United States, as builders of the features themselves, and as primary generators of complex habitat for dense and diverse assemblages of invertebrates and fishes. Exploration of these habitats has been carried out using both manned submersibles and remotely operated vehicles. Although apparently not yet seriously affected by human activity, these environments are being considered for protected status by the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council.
