Global Climate Change and its Effect on Corals

Dr. Chris Langdon, Associate Professor, Division of Marine Biology and Fisheries, Associate Director of the National Center for Caribbean Coral Reef Research (NCORE) and Co-Founder of the South Florida Coral Reef and Climate Change Laboratory at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, is a leader in studying the impact of global warming and ocean acidification on coral reefs. To understand the effects of these combined environmental stressors, Dr. Langdon conducts experimental studies on coral specimens at the Rosenstiel School’s first-of-its-kind Coral Reef and Climate Change Laboratory, and observes naturally occurring scenarios in the Florida Keys reef tract and other reefs around the Caribbean.

Langdon’s presentation will outline his team’s experimental approach to understanding the effect of global climate change on corals and coral reefs, and groundbreaking research to protect and conserve these beautiful creatures. AlumNites is a complimentary educational program sponsored by the University of Miami Alumni Association designed to offer lifelong learning opportunities to alumni and the community.

To RSVP or for more information, please contact the University of Miami Alumni Association at 305.284.2872 or 1.866.UMALUMS (862.5867) or via email at alumni@miami.edu. Please include “AlumNites” in the e-mail subject line.

Animal Model Discoveries at the Aquatic Threshold

The simplicity of most marine animals makes them ideal models for understanding everything from how we evolved to how our bodies work. The simple design of the brain of Aplysia, sea slugs, makes them ideal models for shedding light on how our own brains work. The National Resource for Aplysia at UM’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science is the only place in the world where Aplysia californica are cultured and raised for research purposes. Aplysia from the facility are used in experiments that help us to understand how we learn and what memories are. Join Lynne Fieber, M.S. ’82, Ph.D. ’89, associate professor of marine biology and fisheries, for an inside look at her research on Aplysia and a personal encounter with the simple yet beautiful creatures.

Chuck earned his M.S. under Frederick M. Bayer and his Ph.D. under Harding Owre Michel, both in Biological Oceanography. He is a professor at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center in Dania Beach, FL. His area of expertise is in the classification, ecology, distribution and evolution of crinoids (sea lilies and feather stars). Research on these animals has taken him to the Bahamas, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Micronesia, Australia and Malaysia. Messing headed teams that were the first to directly record growth rates and crawling in crinoids.
