Marine Science Program

Marine Science/Biology

Marine Science: Introduction to Marine Science (MSC 111), Marine Chemistry (215), Marine Biology (230), Marine Biology Lab (232), Physical Oceanography (301), either Marine Chemistry Lab (216) or Physical Oceanography Lab (302), and 12 elective credits in Marine Science, at least 6 of which must be at the 300-level or higher. Biology: General Biology (BIL 150) with lab (151), Evolution & Biodiversity (160) with lab (161), Genetics (250), Cellular and Molecular Biology (255), Ecology (330), Physiology (360) and twelve credits of elective as described for Biology majors for a total of 34 credits. MSC 230 and one 300+ level Biology elective may count towards both the Marine Science and Biology major. Chemistry: Principles of Chemistry I and II, with labs (CHM 111, 112, 113, 114), Organic Chemistry I with lab (CHM 201, 205), Organic Chemistry II with lab (CHM 202*, 206*). A minor in Chemistry is earned with an adequate CHM GPA.

Geological Science: Earth System History (GSC 111) OR Earth System with lab (GSC 110, 114)

Mathematics: Calculus I and II (MTH 161, 162) and one semester of a computer programming or statistics course. The following classes are approved to satisfy the computer/statistics requirement: MSC 204, BIL 311, MTH 224, Computer Science CSC 120, Psychology PSY 291.

Physics: University Physics (PHY 205, 206, 207, with one lab, either 208 or 209); or College Physics (101, 102, 106, 108)

English: Composition I and II (ENG 105, 106)

Arts and Humanities cognate (9 credits)

People and Society cognate (9 credits)

Six credits of elective, including 3 at the upper level, to be approved by advisor.

* CHM 202 and 206 may be substituted by courses leading to a major or minor in an approved science or math discipline (CHM, CSC, GSC, MIC, MTH, PHY).
