Sara Johnson

Born in rural Kentucky, Sara Johnson grew up around nature, exploring the woods surrounding her house as though each overturned leaf, cellar spider and cardinal was an exciting scientific discovery. “My mother studied as a biological oceanographer, so I was raised on biology lessons and stories of her research adventures in far off places like Panama and Antarctica,” says Johnson. Inspired, she completed as many science classes as possible, studied marine and molecular biology during the summers, and, in her senior year, attended the prestigious Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science at Western Kentucky University.

When it came time to choose which university to attend, diversity in both educational and research opportunities weighed heavily in her decision. “UM offered the best marine science undergraduate program of all the schools I applied to and the chance to be a part of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science was something I couldn’t pass up.” Currently a freshman Marine Science/Biology major, Johnson is a Foote Fellow, member of the honors program, and member of the Freshman Leadership Academy at the University of Miami. Despite the heavy class load, Johnson looks forward to pursuing undergraduate research once she’s settled into the University; in the meantime, she stays busy planning for a bright future with a little time left over for fun. “I am an avid SCUBA diver and rookie rugby player so when I am not studying or at a school meeting, I’m probably either underwater or in a scrum.”
