Matthew Archer

Matthew is a graduate student in the Upper Ocean Dynamics Research Group, lead by Professor Nick Shay. In a year out before university, he spent time sailing in the Caribbean and skydiving in Spain, activities that sparked an interest in understanding oceanic and atmospheric dynamics and eventually encouraged him to change his degree from medicine to oceanography. He earned an Ocean Science BSc (Hons) at the University of Plymouth in 2010. During this time he undertook two summer internships in the US; at the University of Hawaii and the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in Georgia. His thesis looked at accuracy in wind measurements by high frequency radar. He will continue his research at RSMAS using WERA HF radar data to study surface currents, wave heights and winds in order to understand the oceanic and atmospheric dynamics off the East Florida Shelf.

Matthew chose to study at Miami because of its unique graduate program that combines meteorology and physical oceanography into one department that encourages interdisciplinary research.
