Eliza Martin

When asked how she became interested in science, Eliza Martin’s answer is simple; “I fell in love with Calculus.” While obtaining a degree in Mathematics at the University of Tennessee — Knoxville, Martin applied her love of statistical equations in some very unique ways. “I started work on ecological models of protists, moved on to plants, then aquatic animals and humans,” she says. “As a senior, my thesis focused on developing a spatial model for figuring out the settlement of native peoples throughout North America.”

Studying both mathematics and fisheries biology at the University of Miami, Martin is combining her newfound love of marine science with that of complex differential equations. “I’m working on the development of deterministic fisheries models to create a clear source for information on the spatial distribution of fish species.”

Despite her rigorous coursework, Martin makes sure to save time (and money!) to devote to one of her passions, wildlife photography. “My grandfather was a wildlife photographer, so I guess it’s in my genes,” she says. And though her photography has, on occasion, overlapped into documenting laboratory procedures, equipment and specimens, she finds a well-placed dragonfly resting atop a lily pad much more appealing. “I try not to miss an opportunity to capture the moment.”
