Marine Biology & Fisheries
Letter From Chair

Welcome to the Division of Marine Biology and Fisheries Web site.
Welcome to the Division of Marine Biology and Fisheries Web site. The Rosenstiel School resides in a state where the coastal environment provides a vibrant recreational and commercial resource. At the same time, our coasts receive many stressors due to the high human demands placed on this environment. Therefore, it is not surprising that marine biology would factor so heavily in the Rosenstiel School curriculum
Local coral reefs in the nearby Keys that draw scuba enthusiasts and snorkelers from around the world face increasing hardship from warming waters, encroachment, and other environmental issues. These days, marine organisms, from microbes to fish, are arbiters of ecosystem change and worldwide climate change. That’s why the Rosenstiel School researchers are keeping a watchful eye on ecosystem changes.
Whether it’s traveling to the Arctic to study zooplankton, examining causes and impacts of harmful algal blooms or counting fish in our own Florida Keys “backyard,” the Rosenstiel School’s marine biologists work with a variety of colleagues across disciplines to take a “big-picture” approach, frequently referred to as ecosystem-based research.
I personally invite you to tour our Web site and see the exciting marine biology research and education that happens everyday at the Rosenstiel School!
