Marine & Atmospheric Chemistry

Letter from Chair

Welcome to the Division of Marine and Atmospheric Chemistry!

As you wind your way through this division's Web pages, you’ll quickly see an obvious common thread: global change. Whether it’s the chemistry of the air, oceans, ground waters, or sediment, the chemists here at the Rosenstiel School are exploring change from the global to the molecular level. Whether it is evaluating carbon dioxide in the troposphere, projecting greenhouse gases in the ocean, or estimating the impacts of African dust on our global climate, our scientists are among the most productive as concerns about climate change continue to grow.

Modern chemical laboratory instrumentation aids our scientists at the school and in the field — even aboard our unique labs on the Royal Caribbean EXPLORER OF THE SEAS, on the Rosenstiel School research vessel R/V WALTON SMITH, or on a host of other American research vessels sailing the world oceans.

Our division’s students, research staff, and faculty are involved in research from the Arctic to the Antarctic and all the major ocean basins in between. Atmospheric aerosols, with their roles in atmospheric and marine chemistry and biology, as well as ocean carbon dynamics, are prominent in our research portfolio. It’s no surprise that the Rosenstiel School, as a comprehensive atmospheric and marine research hub, is a leader among oceanographic institutions. And, the Division of Marine and Atmospheric Chemistry, with its ground- and aircraft-based atmospheric studies and oceanographic expeditions, is playing its role in expanding that reputation.

Take a look at our work and you will see that this leading chemistry division, while located near the tropics, evaluates the entire earth system to understand the critical processes affecting society.
