ABSTRACT

We present a new transport method to study the effects of the unsteady eddies on the transport of the large-scale circulations in the oceans. The new method is a hybrid of the Lagrangian and Eulerian methods, and called TIME theory (transport induced by mean-eddy interaction). A simple analysis suggests that the ratio of the characteristic time scales of the dynamic variability and length scales of the instantaneous flux controls the efficiency of transport.
