Short Biographies of Coordinators of Mini-Project 1:
The Pantanal floodplain
 

   Mr. Alberto Palombo

Mr. Alberto Palombo has more than 15 years of experience in water resources, environment, and regional development issues, particularly in regard to information systems related to this areas; regional planning (natural resources, water, environmental management, and transportation), evaluation of development of regional impact, feasibility studies, water and wastewater modeling for distribution and supply systems; geographical information systems (GIS) integration; telemetry and remote sensing; community participation processes; implementation of large-scale information systems projects for natural resource management; multi-lateral project management for water and environment sectors.

Since 1994, Mr. Palombo has been a Research Associate and Coordinator for Latin American and Caribbean Programs: Florida Center for Environmental Studies. State University System of Florida. Boca Raton, FL, USA.

Mr. Palombo received an M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee, USA, 1987. Major: Operations Research and Information Systems.

   Dr. Pierre Girard

Dr. Pierre Girard is a Visiting Professor at the Bioscience Institute of the Federal University of Mato Grosso, Brazil, where he teaches Masters students and performs research. He received a Ph.D. in Isotopic Hydrology from Quebec Univervity at Montreal, 1994.

He is involved in the SHIFT (Studies of Human Impacts on Forest and Floodplains in the Tropics) program since 1997. He performs research in the Pantanal Ecology Project, a subcomponent of SHIFT, where he is involved with the hydrology and hydrochemistry of the flood pulse in the Brazilian Pantanal. Dr. Girard recently integrated the LBA (Large Biosphere Atmosphere experiment in Amazonia) research team in Mato Grosso.

Dr. Girard also also is consulting for the Mato Grosso State on topics related to water management. He is involved with a GEF project in the city of Cuiabá (Mato Grosso’s capital) about the impact of the city on local water resources.
