  Dr. John (Jack) Gladwell

Dr. John Gladwell is President of Hydro Tech International, a consulting firm based in Vancouver, Canada. He formerly served at UNESCO's Headquarters (Paris) in the Science Sector of the International Hydrological Programme, where for many years he was Acting Director. Dr. Gladwell holds degrees in Business Administration, Civil Engineering (M.S., Texas A&M University, 1961) and Agricultural Engineering (Ph.D., University of Idaho, 1970).

Research Interests

Dr. Gladwells's interests focus on water related issues and problems of the humid tropics. He has served for a number of years on the Board of Governors of CATHALAC (a regional humid tropics research centre located in Panama). He continues to be involved as a consultant and advisor to organizations in the solution of water related issues and problems of the humid tropics. Dr. Gladwell has maintained an active international lecturing program, which has included sponsorship by the US National Academy of Sciences, The US National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, the Organization of American States, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and numerous other professional organizations.

Selected Publications

While in UNESCO, Dr. Gladwell established a publication series dealing with the problems of the humid tropics, and was instrumental in the development and production of a state-of-the-art book on the problems and situations of tropical regions: Hydrology and Water Management in the Humid Tropics. Dr. Gladwell served as Editor and contributor to a recently published book on sustainable development: Sustainability Criteria for Water Resource Systems, published by Cambridge Press. He is now working on a contribution to the Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems on the subject of sustainable water resource systems.

  Dr. Evan Vlachos

Dr. Evan Vlachos is Professor of Sociology and Civil Engineering at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, where he is also Associate Director of the International School for Water Resources. He holds a Law degree from the University of Athens (1959), and M.A. (1962) and Ph.D. (1964) degrees in Sociology from Indiana University.

Research Interests

Dr. Evan Vlachos has worked on a variety of projects in the United States and abroad on aspects of urban planning, water resources planning and management, forecasting and futurism, technology assessment and demography.

He has served in a variety of US and international commissions, especially on water resources and the environment. Dr. Vlachos has served as Member and Chairman of the Environmental Advisory Board, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1982-1987. He has been a member of the Advisory Panel on Environmental and Earth S&T in NATO, Brussels (Eastern Europe and Russia) between 1993-2000. Dr. Vlachos is also a member of UNESCO's Committee on "Water and Civilization."

Dr. Vlachos is the recipient of the Army's Outstanding Civilian Service Medal (1987), the CSU Oliver Pennock Distinguished Service Award (1988), and the American Water Resources Association's Icko Iben Award (1993).
