Short Profiles of Participants in Institute 2000

This page describes the academic backgrounds, research or professional interests, and current activities of participants in the Summer Institute 2000. The 20 participants (11 females, 9 males) come from 11 countries in the IAI region.


Placeholder picture Angélica Almeyda has a BS degree in Forestry from the University of La Molina (Perú). She works for Conservation International (CI) Perú, an NGO focused on interdisciplinary and participative approaches to community-based conservation studies. Angélica has participated in CI-sponsored projects in Cordillera del Cóndor and Vilcabamba, Perú.
Placeholder picture Jennifer Balkan received an MA degree in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin (UT). She is now working on her Ph.D. in Sociology at UT and her main interest is in demographic studies. Jennifer's dissertation focuses on the relationship between temporary and permanent migration and its associations with land tenure, economic structure, culture, and family. As part of her Ph.D. work, she has conducted fieldwork in Chiapas, Mexico.

Placeholder picture Odalys Bouza has a degree in Geography from the University of La Habana (Cuba). She is a researcher at Cuba's Institute of Tropical Geography, where she is managing a project on detection of changes in land cover in the south coast of Habana Province. Odalys recently began to work on a doctorate on the integrated management of coastal ecosystems in the south of the Province of Habana.
Placeholder picture Jeffrey Bury graduated with an MA in International Affairs from The American University (USA). He is now a doctoral student in the Department of Geography of the University of Colorado-Boulder. Jeffrey's dissertation work focuses on the impact of transnational mining corporations on the local communities in the northern Department of Cajamarca, Perú. Jeffrey also is involved in developing interactive research modules for secondary grade levels students on global change and geographic studies.
Placeholder picture Andrea Chavez received an MA in Geography from the University of Miami (USA) and an MA in Political Science, Geography and International Law from the University of Heidelberg (Germany). She is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. Program in Geography at Syracuse University. Andrea wants to develop an analysis of changes in the use of natural resources in the Lower Rain Forest Region of Amazonian Southeastern Peru. Andrea currently works with a Peruvian NGO "Perú Verde" in the elaboration of a plan for community-based management of natural resources in protected areas.
Placeholder picture Gabriela Eguren has a Doctorate in Environmental Sciences from the University of Concepción (Chile). She is now a professor and researcher at Uruguay's Universidad de la República. Gabriela is involved in an IAI-PESCA project exploring the impact of forestry on landuse patterns and ecosystem functioning in Uruguayan grasslands. Gabriela's PESCA project includes a validation of the satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in Uruguayan grasslands.
Placeholder picture Elizabeth Fraser received her MA in Geography from George Washington University. She is currently working on her Ph.D. at Louisiana State University. Her dissertation examines patterns of changing land use, the driving forces behind these changes, and their social and environmental impacts on the western border of the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve in Northeast Honduras.
Placeholder picture Glynis Ford received an MS in Geographic Information Systems from the University of the West Indies at St. Augustine, Trinidad. She currently is a regional rural planner with Jamaica's Ministry of Agriculture. Glynis has responsibility for the management, development and maintenance of the Jamaica Geographic Information System (JAMGIS). Glynis will begin work on a Ph.D. on the topic "Defining agricultural zones as a means of protecting agricultural lands in Jamaica."
Placeholder picture Kerri Gilders received a BS in Environmental Science (Plant Ecology) from the University of Saskatchewan (Canada) and is pursuing an MS in Soil Science at the same institution. Kerri's graduate work is part of an IAI-CRN project headed by Dr. Holm Tiessen. Kerri's work includes a study of the nutrient and carbon cycling characteristics of native species that could be used effectively in agro-forestry systems, regeneration of degraded areas, and pasture management in northeast Brazil
Placeholder picture Hector Grau has a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Colorado at Boulder (USA). He is currently a researcher at the University of Tucumán (Argentina). Hector's research compares fire regimes and forest dynamics under contrasting conditions of landuse: protected areas in Argentina (little grazing and fore proscription), unprotected areas in Argentina (intermediate grazing, agricultural exploitation, and depopulation due to migration to urban centers) and unprotected areas in Bolivia (high grazing intensity, increase in population).
Placeholder picture Juan Pablo Guerschman has a BS in Agronomy from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA, Argentina). He currently is pursuing a Ph.D. in the Department of Ecology of the same institution, focusing on the ecology of terrestrial temperate ecosystems. Juan Pablo's dissertation contributes to an IAI-ISP3 project exploring the impact of land use on ecosystem function and structure in temperate areas of North and South America.
Placeholder picture Marcelo Ilundain has a degree in Agronomy from Universidad de la República (Uruguay). He currently is an advisor on economic and environmental issues to OPYPA, an agency of Uruguay's Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries. OPYPA provides input to the Uruguayan Government on issues that affect land use, such as development of forestation and crop irrigation programs. Marcelo also is finishing a postgraduate degree in Environmental Management at CLAEH (Centro Latinoamericano de Economía Humana).
Placeholder picture Ignacio Llovet has an MA in Sociology from FLACSO (Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales) and expects to defend his Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Toronto (Canada) in September 2000. Ignacio teaches both at the University of Belgrano and FLACSO’s branch in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ignacio's expertise is on Rural Sociology. His dissertation focuses on the historical, ideological, and political factors that might explain the reemergence of sharecropping in Argentine agriculture.
Placeholder picture Erna López received an MS in Conservation and Management of Natural Resources (area of concentration: land use change) from Universidad Michoacana (Mexico). Erna is now pursuing a Ph.D. at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Her dissertation focuses on the factors driving land use change in the Cuitzeo Basin. Erna also has teaching responsibilities in a course on geographic information systems and remote sensing applied to resource management.
Placeholder picture Daniel López Giraldo has a degree in Agronomy from the University of Caldas (Colombia). He is now a planning consultant at the Corporación Autónoma Regional de Caldas, a governmental institution involved with the management of natural resources in the Department of Caldas. Daniel contributes to the decision-making process on financing projects such as reforestation efforts and the construction of rural aqueducts. Daniel also is involved with territorial planning and the development of land management plans (mandated by law) for municipalities within Caldas.
Placeholder picture Eugenio Marcano has a Ph.D. in Soil Science from Cornell University (USA). He is now working with an NGO in the Dominican Republic dedicated to promote the awareness and use of geospatial technologies (GIS, GPS, remote sensing) among governmental and private sector institutions. One of his current projects is dedicated to introducing concepts of GIS, map making, and environmental observations to high school students.
Placeholder picture André Mendes received a Ph.D. in Environmental Planning from the University of Bristol (England). He is a professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), where he teaches courses on hydrological and environmental modeling and urban and regional planning. André has served as consultant on water resources planning for private and public engineering groups, NGOs, and state and national agencies in Brazil. He is involved in a project sponsored by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) to conserve biodiversity in the Pantanal watershed.
Placeholder picture Carla Morsello has an MS in Environmental Sciences from the University of São Paulo (Brazil). She is now pursuing doctoral studies in the University of East Anglia (England). Her dissertation is examining the ecological and socioeconomic sustainability of various livelihood strategies (Brazil nut and mahogany extraction, ecotourism, and marketing of handcrafts) in the Kayapo Indigenous Reserve of eastern Amazônia.
Placeholder picture Jane Read received a Ph.D. in Geography from Louisiana State University (USA). She is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Geography of Syracuse University. Jane is an environmental geographer with primary interests in environmental applications of geographic information systems and remote sensing, with a focus on human-environment interactions, global environmental change, and Latin America. Her dissertation work, which she is now extending, examined land use and land cover changes in lowland Costa Rica.
