The selection of candidates took place during April 2000, with the participation of representatives from the two organizing institutions (IAI and the University of Miami) and input from the Institute Leaders. Twenty two participants and two alternates were selected.
The IAI Directorate contacted all applicants via e-mail on April 24, 2000 to inform them about their status. All applicants were assured that the selection process was thorough and followed the guidelines defined and announced in advance. Selected participants were given a 10-day period to confirm their acceptance. One of the 22 originally selected participants had to turn down partiucipation and was replaced by one of the alternates.
