A table of travel arrangements for guest lecturers supported by the Summer Institute is shown below.
We are issuing two types of airline tickets for Institute guest lecturers:
Electronic Tickets: Whenever possible, we have tried to issue electronic tickets. In these cases, a code is listed (or will be listed) on the "ET" or "Electronic Ticket" column of the table. This is the reservation code. With this code, you can call the airline to confirm your reservation, and maybe select a seat and add your frequent flier number. However, please note that you will not be able to get a paper ticket from the airline prior to the departure date. In other words, an electronic ticket is NOT a pre-paid paper ticket. You will only be able to claim the ticket when you go to the airport on the day of your flight. Please do not feel uncomfortable about not having a paper ticket. We have only issued electronic tickets for itineraries that are fairly simple and with a single airline. Also, with the confirmation number, you can check with the airline before the day of your flight. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Paper tickets: In those cases when electronic tickets were not possible, we have issued paper tickets. These tickets will be sent to you via courier, and we will notify you via e-mail when they are sent. Once you receive the ticket, please clet us know that you have received it. You may send e-mail to gpodesta@rsmas.miami.edu or rosanne@rsmas.miami.edu to acknowledge receipt of the ticket.
Guest lecturers purchasing their own tickets or providing their own transportation (e.g., rental car) will be reimbursed upon arrival in MIami.

Although we will try to make an effort to meet you upon arrival at Miami International Airport, we are short-staffed and that may not be possible. If someone is meeting you, the meeting place will be as follows:
A map of Miami International Airport can be found at:

If you do not see anyone carrying an 'IAI" sign, please proceed to the ground level (baggage claim level) and take a taxi to the Hampton Inn Coconut Grove Hotel (see info below). The taxi ride should cost about $15-20. If the Institute is supporting your participation, please remember to ask for a receipt so we can reimburse you for this expense.
We have made reservations for all guest lecturers at the Hampton Inn Coconut Grove hotel. The hotel address is:
2800 SW 28th Terrace (one block from corner of US1 and SW 27th Avenue)
Coconut Grove, FL 33133
Telephone: 1.305.448.2800
FAX: 1.305.442.8655

If you are supported by the Institute, the hotel will bill the University of Miami for the room costs (additional expenses are your responsibility). If your agency is supporting your partiipation, the hotel rate is $84.38 per night (this includes tax). The rate includes a good continental breakfast buffet. If the dates listed below are not correct, please let Institute organizers know as soon as possible, as we have guaranteed all reservations.

The Hampton Inn is very close (a 5-minute taxi ride) from downtown Coconut Grove, a tourist area with numerous restaurants, shops, bookstores, movie theaters and other attractions. The attractions are mainly located at the Cocowalk and Mayfair malls, both on Grand Avenue.
A list of restaurants in the Coconut Grove area can be found at http://metropolitan-networks.net/miami/diningguide/dl1co.htm. The Hampton Inn has arrangements with some Coconut Grove which allow you to get discounts showing your room access card. Check with the hotel desk for further information.
Another interesting area to visit is south Miami Beach (or South Beach). Restaurants in South Beach are listed in http://miami.diningguide.net/dl1sb.htm.
If you have not been met at the airport, we will leave a message for you at the hotel's desk indicating the time at which you will be picked up by Institute staff and driven to the Rosenstiel School, where Institute activities will take place. All guest lecturers will be picked up at the hotel unless other arrangements are made (e.g., for those guest lecturers driving to Miami).
A map showing the relative locations of the Hampton Inn Hotel, the Rosenstiel School, and Miami International Airport is available here.
All guest lecturers have been asked to address topics relevant to this year's Summer Institute theme in one or more standard 45-50 minute lectures or seminars. Additionally, guest lecturers may be asked to interact with Institute participants in a more informal setting such as round-table discussions, role-playing sessions, etc.
The classroom where guest lectures will be presented (Marine Science Center 343) is equipped with an electronic podium and a video projector, so electronic presentations are possible using Power Point on a Mac or PC (included in the podium). Overhead and slide projectors, and a VCR player are also available.
Guest lectures are requested to provide an extended abstract for their presentation. Examples of abstracts can be found here. If you want to send to us ahead of time or bring with you a Power Point presentation, we can include it on the Institute's WWW site. An example of a presentation prepared by Dr. Paul Filmer (NSF) can be found here.
A list of all guest lectures and tentative topics can be found here.
Brief profiles of the Institute participants' training and current activities can be found here.
An assorted collection of maps, including a map of the Miami area and a Rosenstiel School Campus map can be found here.
Other information for guest lecturers will be added soon.
