April 30, 2001

The selection of participants in the third Summer Institute on Interdisciplinary Science in the Americas has been completed. The IAI Directorate and the University of Miami have contacted all applicants via e-mail and regular mail to inform them about their status.

April 17, 2001 Information about the Institute 2001 application process has been posted. The information includes a breakdown of the number of applicants (92) by country of affiliation.
April 2, 2001

ALL APPLICATIONS RECEIVED BY APRIL 6 WILL BE CONSIDERED. The original application guidelines stated that application packages had to be postmarked by Friday, March 30, 2001. We have decided to accept and consider all complete applications that reach Miami by close of business (5 PM) on Friday, April 6, 2001.

March 16, 2001 A preliminary list of guest lecturers who have confirmed their participation on the Summer Institute 2001 has been posted. The list will be updated periodically.
February 16, 2001 Summer Institute 2000 follow-up activities. To follow-up on work started as part of the mini-project on land use in Amazonia during the Summer Institute 2000, Juan Pablo Guerschman and Carlos Andre Mendes visited the Federal University of Acre, Brazil, in January 2001. Their visit was hosted by Dr. Foster Brown, coordinator of the Amazonia mini-project. The objective of the visit was to continue the activities performed during the Summer Institute 2000, and to strengthen the communication among the respective research groups. During the stay in Acre, Juan Pablo and Andre visited the Seringal Prongaba, an extractivist reserve in the Amazon Rainforest. January 23, 2001 The Summer Institute organizers are glad to announce that two world-class scientists have been selected to lead the Institute 2001. Dr. John Gladwell, President of Hydro Tech International and former Senior Programme Specialist of UNESCO's International Hydrological Programme will lead the natural science aspects. Dr. Evan Vlachos from the Department of Sociology of Colorado State University will be the social science leader. Short biographic profiles for both leaders are available on the WWW site.
January 11, 2001 The official announcement of the Summer Institute 2001 has been released and the application process has started. The deadline to receive applications in Miami is Friday April 6, 2001. To plan and conduct the Summer Institute 2001, the IAI and UM have joined efforts with UNESCO’s Regional Office of Science and Technology for Latin America and the Caribbean.
December 5, 2000 Summer Institute 2001 - Update 1: Since the release of the preannouncement, almost 50 people have registered their names using the electronic form at this WWW site. The official announcement of the Institute 2001 and the beginning of the application process will take place in early January 2001. Prospective applicants should remember that full financial support will be provided to participants, and that a spectrum of applicants (from graduate students to senior scientists) has been selected in previous years.
November 16, 2000 A description of the selection process for the Summer Institute 2000 was added. The description includes a table with a breakdown of applications by country.

October 16, 2000 Notes for the lecture presented by Dr. David Bray during the Summer Institute 2000 have been posted as a PDF file.
July 5, 2000 PRELIMINARY biographic sketches of Institute 2000 guest lecturers have been posted.
June 20, 2000 A PRELIMINARY program of the Summer Institute 2000 has been posted (see Institute 2000 page). This program is subject to change in the next few days. We are expecting some last-minute additions to the list of guest lecturers. The links to lecture notes and speaker bios have not been implemented yet.
June 2, 2000 Short biographic profiles of participants in the Summer Institute 2000 are available.
May 13, 2000 The two leaders of the Summer Institute 2000 will be Drs. Charles Wood and Michael Binford, both from the University of Florida, Gainesville, USA. Short biographic sketches of both leaders have been added to the WWW site.
May 12, 2000 Logistic information for Institute 2000 participants is now available.
May 10, 2000 Selection Process Update. All applicants should have received or will receive shortly a letter from the IAI informing them of the outcome of the selection process. The letters were sent from Miami via regular mail on April 25, 2000. All selected applicants have been contacted via e-mail. If you have any questions related to the Institute 2000 selection process, please contact Guillermo Podestá, Science Coordinator (gpodesta@rsmas.miami.edu).
April 24, 2000 The selection process has ended. The selection of participants in the second IAI/UM Summer Institute has been completed. The IAI Directorate and the University of Miami already have started the process of contacting all applicants via e-mail or regular mail to inform them about their status. If you have not received a letter in the next 10 days or so, please contact Institute organizers.

The large number of applications received (over 80 complete applications) and the high quality of the applicants required a careful review process. All applicants can be assured that the selection process was thorough and followed the guidelines defined in advance.

The IAI and the University of Miami thank all aplicants for their interest in the Summer Institute 2000 and for the time and hard work put into preparing the required application materials. To those of you who were selected to attend the first Summer Institute, we look forward to seeing you in Miami! To those whose participation we cannot support this year, we encourage you to stay involved in the Summer Institute and the IAI's activities.

April 17, 2000 The Application Period for the Second Summer Institute is now closed. No further applications will be considered. Over 80 applications have been received from scientists throughout the Americas. The Selection Committee will review all applications (including some that came in a little late or missing a few pieces of information) in order to select Institute participants and backup candidates. Admittedly, this task will be difficult not only because of the number of applications received, but especially due to the very high quality of the applicants.

All applicants (selected or not) will be notified about the results of the selection process in the next few weeks (around late April-early May). An announcement will be posted in this WWW site once the notification process begins.

The IAI and the University of Miami thank all aplicants for their interest in the Summer Institute 2000 and for the time and hard work all applicants put into preparing the required application materials. Thank you all, and good luck in the selection!

July 2, 1999 Dr. Mario Tiscareño-López (Mexico) has canceled his participation in the first Summer Institute. Ms. Andrea Ray has been selected as alternate participant. A brief profile of Andrea's interests and activities has been added to the participants' profile document.
May 4, 1999 The selection process for the 1999 Institute has been completed. All applicants will be notified in the next few days about the results of the selection. Applicants will be contacted by the IAI Directorate via e-mail or letter.
April 10, 1999 Application period for first IAI/UM Summer Institute is now closed. Results of the selection process will be announced in late April or early May 1999. All applicants will be contacted at that time.
